Failing usually does not send an experienced worker back to a full apprenticeship. But repeated failures stack up: more fees, waiting periods, mandatory upgrading or a study plan, a new application, and in some provinces a hard limit on how many times you can try.
A hard cap on attempts
British Columbia and Saskatchewan cap trade qualifiers at four attempts to pass. In Saskatchewan the third and fourth attempts require prescribed upgrading first.
Mandatory upgrading or a study plan
Saskatchewan and Manitoba can require upgrading before you retry. Nova Scotia makes you build a study plan with an industry training consultant after repeated fails.
A new application and fee
Alberta can require an approved training plan after two or more fails. If it is rejected you submit a new application and pay a new fee to try again.

Ontario holds you to a 30-day wait before a retake, and you pay the exam fee again every time you sit it.
